When people think about Okinawa herping, one snake immediately comes to mind: the Habu.

The Okinawan Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis) is one of the most iconic venomous snakes in Japan and a major highlight for anyone interested in Japan herping tours. With its large body, striking yellow-and-black coloration, and impressive presence, encountering a Habu in the wild is an unforgettable experience.

However, many visitors do not realize that Habu snakes show remarkable variation depending on the island and region. During herping trips across Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands, several distinct color morphs and local forms can regularly be observed.

If you are planning an Okinawa herping adventure, island-hopping across the Ryukyus is one of the best ways to discover these fascinating variations.

1. Normal Habu

The typical Okinawan Habu displays the classic yellow body with bold black markings.

This famous “Habu pattern” is deeply associated with Okinawan culture and is even used for traditional musical instruments such as sanshin skins. The strong contrast between yellow and black makes this the image most people imagine when they think of a Habu snake in Okinawa.

For many wildlife photographers and reptile enthusiasts, this is the ultimate Okinawa herping target.

2. Golden Habu (Kin-Habu)

The so-called “Golden Habu” is a morph with reduced black pigmentation, somewhat similar to hypomelanistic morphs seen in captive reptiles.

Compared to normal individuals, these snakes appear much brighter yellow, with reduced dark markings and an almost glowing appearance under flashlight beams during night herping.

In some parts of Okinawa, these individuals are relatively common, while in other areas they are rarely encountered.

Finding a bright golden Habu crossing a jungle road at night is one of the most exciting moments in Japan herping.

3. Silver Habu (Gin-Habu)

The “Silver Habu” is one of the most beautiful Habu variations found in the Ryukyu Islands.

These snakes have greatly reduced yellow coloration, giving them a silver, grey, or almost white appearance. The contrast between the pale body and dark markings creates a very elegant and unique look.

Some populations contain a surprisingly high number of silver-toned individuals, although locating these areas usually requires extensive field experience and local knowledge.

Among international herpers visiting Okinawa, the Gin-Habu is often considered one of the most desirable Habu morphs to photograph.

4. Striped Habu

One of the most fascinating local forms is the “Striped Habu” found on Kumejima Island.

Unlike the typical blotched pattern seen on most Habu snakes, these individuals display longitudinal stripes running along the body. On Kumejima, striped individuals make up a large percentage of the population.

Young Habu snakes are known to show more daytime activity than adults, and some researchers believe the striped pattern may provide better camouflage in the more open habitats found on the island.

For anyone interested in evolutionary biology and island adaptation, this is one of the most interesting examples of regional variation among Japanese snakes.

5. Tokashiki Habu

The Tokashiki Island population has a very distinctive appearance.

These snakes tend to have weaker contrast, faded dark markings, and in some cases reddish or copper-colored eyes that give them an especially intense expression.

Although still classified as the same species, Tokashiki Habu look noticeably different from mainland Okinawan populations, showing how isolated island ecosystems can shape the appearance of reptiles over time.

In addition to the Okinawan Habu, the Ryukyu Islands are also home to several other fascinating venomous snakes, including:
