Where to Herp in Okinawa

Northern Okinawa (Yanbaru National Park)

The northern region offers the highest probability of encountering the Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis) — approximately 50% under suitable conditions.

For those who want the best chance, we recommend booking two or more nights.

Yanbaru is the most biodiverse area in Okinawa and home to many endemic species:

  • Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis)
  • Hime-habu (Ovophis okinavensis)
  • Yanbaru Ground Gecko (Goniurosaurus nebulozonatus)
  • Okinawa Ishikawa’s Frog (Odorrana ishikawae)
  • Anderson’s crocodile newt(Echinotriton andersoni)
  • Holst’s Frog (Babina holsti)

Birds such as the Okinawa Rail and owls may also be observed.

Recommended stay: Nago area

Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis)

Southern Okinawa (Near Naha)

Accessible from Naha within one hour, ideal for short stays.

Possible species include:

  • Kuroiwa’s Ground Gecko (Goniurosaurus kuroiwae)→Only at Southern Okinawa
  • Okinawa Sword-Tailed Newt (Cynops ensicauda)
  • Okinawan Green Grass Lizard (Takydromus smaragdinus)

There is also a chance to encounter the introduced Sakishima-Habu(Protobothrops elegans).

  • Southern Okinawa → Easier access from the city, Kuroiwa’s Ground Gecko can be observed only in Southern Okinawa.
