Where to Herp in Okinawa
Northern Okinawa (Yanbaru National Park)
The northern region offers the highest probability of encountering the Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis) — approximately 50% under suitable conditions.
For those who want the best chance, we recommend booking two or more nights.
Yanbaru is the most biodiverse area in Okinawa and home to many endemic species:
- Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis)
- Hime-habu (Ovophis okinavensis)
- Yanbaru Ground Gecko (Goniurosaurus nebulozonatus)
- Okinawa Ishikawa’s Frog (Odorrana ishikawae)
- Anderson’s crocodile newt(Echinotriton andersoni)
- Holst’s Frog (Babina holsti)
Birds such as the Okinawa Rail and owls may also be observed.

Southern Okinawa (Near Naha)
Accessible from Naha within one hour, ideal for short stays.
