Among the many reptiles found across the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, one of the most widespread and frequently encountered species is the Ryukyu Green Snake.
Despite being a relatively common snake, this species is surprisingly fascinating due to its remarkable variation in coloration and pattern between islands and regions.
These slender snakes primarily feed on earthworms and are often encountered on forest roads, trails, and roadside vegetation after rain, both during the day and at night.
For herpers and wildlife photographers exploring Okinawa and the Ryukyu Archipelago, searching for local morphs of the Ryukyu Green Snake can become an exciting part of island-hopping expeditions.

Species Information
Japanese name: リュウキュウアオヘビ(Ryukyuaohebi)
English name: Ryukyu Green Snake
Scientific name: Cyclophiops semicarinatus
1. Normal Morph
The most commonly observed form throughout Okinawa Island and much of the central Ryukyus.
This morph shows the classic bright green coloration typically associated with the species. Under natural light, the snake blends beautifully into subtropical forest vegetation.
Although individuals may occasionally display defensive behavior, the species is harmless to humans and generally very calm.

2. Striped Morph
A particularly beautiful morph commonly found in the northern Ryukyu Islands, especially around Amami Oshima and nearby islands.
Its elegant striped pattern and darker, more sophisticated coloration give it a striking appearance that is highly appreciated by reptile photographers and herpers.
Compared to the normal green form, the striped morph has a more refined and dramatic look in photographs.

3. Brown Morph
Perhaps the most unusual variation.
Despite the name “Green Snake,” some individuals display brown or bronze coloration with subtle gradients running across the body.
Under certain lighting conditions, these snakes can appear almost golden or copper-colored, making them especially attractive subjects for photography.

An Important Part of the Forest Ecosystem
Because Ryukyu Green Snakes are relatively small and slender, they are preyed upon by a wide variety of birds, mammals, and larger reptiles.
Their abundance likely makes them an important component of the subtropical forest ecosystem throughout the Ryukyu Islands.

Island-Hopping for Snake Morphs
One of the most fascinating aspects of herping in the Ryukyu Archipelago is discovering how reptile populations vary from island to island.
Even common species such as the Ryukyu Green Snake can show surprisingly different colors and patterns depending on location.
For wildlife photographers and reptile enthusiasts, exploring multiple islands while searching for these local morphs becomes a unique adventure found only in Japan’s southern islands.
Distribution
The Ryukyu Green Snake is distributed across much of the Ryukyu Archipelago, including:
- Okinawa Island
- Amami Oshima
- Tokunoshima
- Most of the surrounding islands of the Ryukyu chain
