- Tour Overview

The Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan are home to an extraordinary diversity of venomous pit vipers collectively known as “Habu.”
On this unique island-hopping herping expedition, we will travel across remote subtropical islands in search of the different Habu species and local populations that inhabit the Ryukyu Archipelago. From the dense forests of Yambaru to isolated volcanic islands rarely visited by outsiders, this tour offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most fascinating reptile assemblages.
Target Habu Species
- Tokara Habu (Protobothrops tokarensis)
- Okinawa Habu / Hon Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis)
- Hime Habu (Ovophis okinavensis)
- Sakishima Habu (Protobothrops elegans)
- Introduced Taiwan Habu (Protobothrops mucrosquamatus)
Each island presents its own atmosphere, habitat, and snake diversity. Participants will have opportunities to observe regional color variation, nocturnal hunting behavior, and the remarkable subtropical ecosystems of the Ryukyu Islands.
In addition to Habu species, we may also encounter many endemic reptiles and amphibians, including:
- Japanese Cave Geckos (Goniurosaurus kuroiwae, Goniurosaurus nebulozonatus)
- Ryukyu Odd-tooth Snake (Lycodon semicarinatus)
- Ryukyu Green Snake (Cyclophiops semicarinatus)
- Ishikawa’s Frog (Odorrana ishikawae)
- Amami Ishikawa’s Frog (Odorrana splendida)
- Anderson’s Crocodile Newt (Echinotriton andersoni)
This expedition is designed for serious herpers, wildlife photographers, and reptile enthusiasts seeking an immersive field experience focused on ethical wildlife observation and island biodiversity.
Join us for an unforgettable journey through the wild subtropical islands of Japan in search of the legendary Habu.

Why This Expedition Is Unique
Unlike standard wildlife tours, this expedition focuses specifically on the diversity of Habu species and island-endemic reptiles across the Ryukyu Archipelago of southern Japan.
By island-hopping through remote subtropical islands, participants will experience dramatic differences in snake coloration, habitat, and biodiversity within a relatively compact geographic region. Few places in the world offer the opportunity to observe multiple species of endemic venomous pit vipers in such a unique island system.
In addition to Habu species, the expedition also provides opportunities to encounter cave geckos (Goniurosaurus spp.), Ryukyu Odd-tooth Snakes (Lycodon semicarinatus), Ryukyu Green Snakes (Cyclophiops semicarinatus), Ishikawa’s Frogs (Odorrana ishikawae), crocodile newts (Echinotriton andersoni), and many other remarkable reptiles and amphibians of subtropical Japan.
This tour is designed for:
- Reptile and amphibian enthusiasts
- Wildlife photographers
- Serious field herpers
- Travelers interested in island biodiversity
- Visitors seeking unique wildlife experiences beyond typical tourism
No previous herping experience is required, but participants should be comfortable with nighttime field activities, flexible schedules, and changing weather conditions.
Safety & Ethical Observation
All wildlife observation is conducted ethically and at a safe distance.
Our guides have extensive field experience working with venomous snakes throughout the Ryukyu Islands, and strict safety protocols are followed throughout the expedition. Participants are never required to handle animals.
Optional Extension Tours
Participants may also join optional extension tours focused on additional iconic Japanese species, including:
- Japanese Mamushi (Gloydius blomhoffii)
- Japanese Giant Salamander (Andrias japonicus)
These optional tours provide opportunities to experience completely different ecosystems and expand your herping adventure across mainland Japan.
Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime reptile expedition through the wild subtropical islands of Japan.
