**How to Find the Elegant Pit Viper (Protobothrops elegans)**

Elegant Pit Viper (Protobothrops elegans)

Found relatively easily on Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands, this species exhibits a wide range of color variations, from orange to gray, making observations particularly enjoyable. The individual I encountered was the largest I’ve ever seen, likely exceeding 1.1 meters in size. Upon closer inspection, I noticed healed injuries along its body, a testament to the numerous trials it has likely faced in the harsh natural environment. An effective way to find them is through cruising after sunset. Look for rice fields and residential areas where their prey, such as frogs and mice, are abundant.

Elegant Pit Viper (Protobothrops elegans)

While not particularly aggressive, the Elegant Pit Viper (Protobothrops elegans) is indeed venomous. Please exercise caution when observing them.
