Overview

Step beyond the temples and into Kyoto’s wild side. In the pristine headwaters and forested mountains surrounding the city lives one of the world’s most extraordinary amphibians — the Japanese Giant Salamander (Andrias japonicus), a protected “Living Fossil.”

This fully private night expedition takes you deep into its natural habitat, offering a rare opportunity to observe these secretive creatures in the wild, guided by an experienced field specialist.

Itinerary

18:00 | Hotel Pick-up (Kyoto or Uji City)
Private transport from your accommodation.

19:00 | Observation area
Arrive at a mountain stream. After gearing up, begin a guided river-walking exploration.
Search for giant salamanders and other nocturnal species in their natural habitat.

23:00 – 24:00 | Hotel Drop-off
Return safely to your accommodation.

The Japanese Giant Salamander is designated as a Special Natural Monument in Japan. Touching, handling, or disturbing the animals is strictly prohibited by law.

Our tours are conducted with full respect for wildlife and habitat preservation.

Cancellation Policy

• Within 7 days: 100% charge

Tours may be rescheduled or canceled in case of heavy rain or unsafe river conditions.

Due to the private nature of this experience, only one group is accepted per night.
