Honshu: One of the World’s Best Herping Destinations

Honshu is one of the best herping destinations in the world.

Here, you can encounter the legendary Mamushi pit viper (Gloydius blomhoffii), known for its fierce samurai-like spirit. You may also come across the Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus)—the largest amphibian on Earth. Additionally, depending on the region, you can observe local color morphs of the Tiger keelback (Rhabdophis tigrinus), a venomous and poisonous snake, with variations in blue, red, and yellow.

The species you can encounter vary by region and season. Please contact us in advance to help plan your itinerary based on your travel dates.
