Wataru HIMENO

Encountered during a nighttime herping expedition in Sabah, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. I found it sleeping on a branch protruding from a jungle trail, mesmerized by its beautifully patterned body. A unique member of the agamid family endemic to Borneo, I observed individuals as large as 25 cm in length. It’s fascinating to note the variations in body patterns and the size of the rough scales on their backs across different regions. This particular sighting occurred at a location approximately two hours north of Kota Kinabalu, the capital city.

Observing the Borneo Forest Dragon (Gonocephalus bornensis)

These diurnal and arboreal lizards often choose secure spots on tree branches to sleep at night, making nighttime observations surprisingly fruitful.
