Where to herp in Okinawa?
⬜︎Northen Okinawa main island(Yambaru national park)
One of the most popular tours takes place in the Yanbaru National Park, located in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island. This area, designated as a national park, is renowned for its endemic species such as the Okinawa Ishikawa’s Frog (Odorrana ishikawae) and the Yanbaru Ground Gecko (Goniurosaurus nebulozonatus). Visitors also have the opportunity to observe rare species like the Habu (Protobothrops flavoviridis), which are increasingly difficult to encounter elsewhere. Please note that a special permit is required for nighttime field activities.
⬜︎Southern Okinawa main island
Our tours in the southern part of Okinawa’s main island are also highly popular. Located just about an hour from the city center, this area offers chances to encounter unique species such as the Kuroiwa’s Ground Gecko (Goniurosaurus kuroiwae), the Okinawan Green Grass Lizard (Takydromus smaragdinus), and the Okinawa Sword-Tailed Newt (Cynops ensicauda). Additionally, sightings of the introduced species Sakishima Habu (Trimeresurus elegans) may occur.
⬜︎Small islands in Okinawa
Okinawa is made up of numerous islands, each offering its own unique herping opportunities. Some islands are home to endemic species or subspecies, while others host populations with strikingly different patterns from those found on the main island—even within the same species. One of the most well-known examples is the Himehabu (Protobothrops flavoviridis), one of the most popular target species for herping in Okinawa. On remote islands such as Tokashiki and Kume, these snakes exhibit beautifully distinct markings that differ significantly from their mainland counterparts.
If you’re traveling all the way to Okinawa, we highly recommend exploring herping opportunities on these remote islands. Each island holds its own ecological surprises and adds a deeper layer to your wildlife adventure.
⬜︎How to plan the trip
When booking a tour, we are happy to assist with itinerary planning and recommend the best spots depending on the species you wish to observe.
Please feel free to contact us at any time.
Since a permit is required for certain activities and there are limited professional herping guides available in Okinawa, advance planning and early inquiries are highly recommended.
